Often, the plant care advice we find online isn’t tailored to Singapore’s unique climate. Thus, we’re launching this educational post to provide our audience with practical tips for nurturing their plants in our tropical environment.
I’m Daryl, one of the co-founders of The Nursery Singapore. For generations, my family has been deeply involved in the industry, primarily as growers supplying plants to nurseries in Singapore and Malaysia. Through this post, my aim is to tackle common issues and dispel misconceptions surrounding houseplants.
1. Water Smart, Not More
Just because it’s humid doesn’t mean your plants need constant watering. Overwatering is one of the most common plant-killers in Singapore.
Pro Tip:
- Always check the soil before watering.
- Use pots with drainage holes to prevent root rot
2. Don’t Forget Airflow
Keep plants in well-ventilated areas – especially indoors. If your space is enclosed, a small fan or occasional open window helps prevent mould and pests.
3. Understand the Sun
Singapore’s sun can be intense, especially near windows.
Pro Tip:
- Bright indirect light works best for most tropical houseplants
- Watch for scorched or bleached leaves – a sign your plant is getting too much sun
4. Repot Regularly
With year-round growth, your plant may outgrow their pots quickly.
Pro Tip:
- Check for roots coming out the bottom of the pot
- Use a well-draining soil mix suited to your plant type
5. Watch for Pests
Warm, moist conditions attract pests like spider mites, mealybugs, etc.
Pro Tip:
- Inspect your plants weekly
- Spray your plant with Neem Oil for prevention, or Neem Oil Eliminator for heavy infestation
- Keep the area around pots clean and dry
Enjoy planting! With a little attention and the right approach, your plants will thrive all year round!
